AREAS OF EXPERTISE

The activities of B·U·S encompass urban development and city management, and span broadly from advising national authorities in formulating urban development and housing policies, to the promotion of self-help initiatives at the local level.

A special area of B·U·S work with respect to urban management is the simplification of urban planning procedures to suit particular developing country conditions. In this context, B·U·S has been closely involved in developing new ways of cooperation and negotiation between public and private interests in land use and land management.

Projects concerned with the upgrading of informal settlements have achieved considerable success in many countries in recent years. B·U·S partners have been working in this field for many years and continue to be active in improving methods and techniques in the planning and management of slum upgrading programmes.

Urban environmental planning and management comprise subjects and methods that have only recently been introduced into the arena of international cooperation. The contribution of B·U·S in this sphere includes the production of Urban Environmental Guidelines for Thailand and Nepal, and the widely circulated GTZ Manual for Urban Environmental Management.
