Urban Management in Africa and Latin America, 1993/94.
Advisory support for the German contribution to the global Urban Management Programme (UMP) funded by the United Nations Development Programme, and executed by UNCHS and the World Bank; this work included:
- Concept development for the establishment of regional urban management expert panels;
- Design and planning of demonstration projects aimed at solving urban environmental problems;
- Organisation of the UMP 1994 annual meeting in Leipzig.
Rehabilitation of the Old Town of Aleppo, Syria, 1993- 1996.
Advising the Syrian project partner, the Aleppo city administration, on planning of implementing programmes and measures for the conservation of the old town of Aleppo, which houses some 300,000 people. Aleppo constitutes the largest complete old city in the Islamic world and has been designated a World Heritage site. Main tasks included:
- Development of guidelines and strategies for the production of a development plan for the old town;
- Recommendations for the establishment of a funding facility to finance urgent building repair work and the conservation of the historic urban fabric.

Urban quarter upgrading in Aswan-Nasriya, Egypt, 1993/94.
Evaluation of the experience in implementing measures to improve living conditions and installing infrastructure in the informal settlement of Nasriya (circa 50,000 population). Making recommendations for further stages of the project and for the dissemination of successful experiences, to other informal settlements in the Governorate of Aswan.
Settlement upgrading, Dominican Republic, 1993 - 1997
Advising on the establishment of a new technical cooperation project for the dissemination of urban quarter upgrading measures developed in the Dominican Republic. The work included:
- Development of cooperative procedures involving municipal administration and nongovernment organizations in measures for improving urban living conditions;
- Advising the 'Instituto Nacional de Ia Vivienda (INVI)' on the establishment and operation of a financing facility for urban upgrading; production of guidelines for planning and implementing upgrading measures.
